Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta Study with Meditation Workshop
Conducted by Āyasmā Aggacitta
Since the late 1970s the application of mindfulness meditation has become increasingly popular in many disciplines worldwide, including mainstream and alternative wellness therapies and diverse forms of spirituality. All these applications of mindfulness are admittedly based on Sati- paṭṭhāna Sutta (MN 10), in which the practice of sati (mindfulness) and paññā (knowledge and wisdom) is described in great detail.
Therefore, this Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta-study with Meditation Workshop is especially relevant today for anyone interested in the theory and practice of mindfulness. The whole sutta is covered in two consecutive workshops, which are critical yet interactive and pragmatic in orientation. Partici- pants will be exposed to several ways of interpreting the sutta and to a variety of approaches in the practice of satipaṭṭhāna. Most importantly, they will be coached on how to apply mindfulness in daily life so that they can experience less suffering, more contenment and greater happiness, culminating in final knowledge and ultimate liberation from all forms of suffering.
Āyasmā Aggacitta is a Malaysian Buddhist monk ordained at Mahasi Meditation Centre, Rangoon, Burma, in 1979. He has trained under various teachers, notably Sayadaws U Paṇḍita (Paṇḍitārāma), U Tissara (Yankin), U Āciṇṇa (Pa Auk) and U Tejaniya (Shwe Oo Min).
Besides practising meditation, he studied advanced Pāli and translation in Thai and Burmese under Sayadaw U Dhammananda at Wat Tamaoh, Lampang, Thailand, from 1983 to 1984. He continued to study the Pāli Tipiṭaka in Myanmar and researched on its interpretation and practice until his return to Malaysia at the end of 1994.
In 2000, he founded Sāsanārakkha Buddhist Sanctuary (SBS), a Buddhist monks training centre at the edge of forested hills near Taiping, Perak, Malaysia.
In recent years, he has spent considerable time investigating popular inter- pretations and practices of Buddhism in the light of the Pāli scriptures, real life experiences and contemporary research findings. Using a critical yet construc- tive approach, he hopes to share his findings with Dhamma practitioners and bring them closer to a practical reality they can more easily connect with.
